Total Escape has Successful Grand Opening and Puzzle Hunt as a Local Family Run Escape Room
June 26, 2019 By Chris B.
"Many people in Winston still don't even know what an escape room is," says Brady Lievens (Co-Founder and Owner of Total Escape). "We like to describe them as immersive, life-sized adventures. Teams are put into a themed environment where they must try to solve all the puzzles and clues in under 60 minutes. An escape room is more than a game, though. It creates an experience that is completely unique and hopefully makes people want to come back tomorrow to be part of another adventure."
"Our family did our first escape room about four years ago," explains Brady. "After that, we would look for new escape rooms anytime we traveled, sometimes going out of our way to find great ones. Then about two years ago, I began to think about how we could create our own escape room, and in late 2017 I partnered with my dad and our business partner, Jill, to make it a reality. We brought my sister Ryann on as manager in July 2018, in September we secured our location, and on December 21, 2018t, we opened our doors to the public."
After opening their second escape room experience in February (Prison Break, the first being Temple of Tikal), Brady and Ryann turned their attention towards throwing a Grand Opening Celebration.
"We were excited to have local stores join with us for our grand opening on March 16th," explains Ryann Lievens (Co-Founder and General Manager of Total Escape). "We loved involving our community and having them host games in their stores to celebrate our official launch. We want to bring fun to the people in our city, so to see hundreds of people out playing games all day, both in local stores and at our building, was a great success."
Also at the Grand Opening, the team announced their next new experience, due to open early summer 2019: a Yacht Heist.
"The rooms, the themes, puzzles, and layout all come from our own minds," Brady says. "We get inspiration from movies and games we played as kids as well as our own experiences and lessons we've learned from playing other escape rooms. The storyline has to grab your attention, and the gameplay has to make you feel like you're a part of the action. Good escape rooms require teams to communicate with one another and work together, utilizing creative thinking, problem-solving skills, and teamwork to escape," continues Brady.
"We've had groups of all ages come through, from 10-year-old birthday parties to 65-year-old work buddies, and they all love it. Anyone who is up for something new will have a great time."
When looking for Grand Opening signage, Dawn Haithcock, administrator for the group, knew that Signarama of Winston-Salem was local. "I dropped in and spoke with Nader the owner about our needs. He did a great job of explaining our options and providing us with quotes. Tim, our account manager, was very helpful. He was 'Johnny on the spot' getting us what we needed and delivering us the proofs, as we had an initial email problem. The entire team was great, and we love our signs. They look great. Will certainly use them for our future signage needs."
